I Prigioni
The series "i Prigioni" (The salves) was born while I was working on the "Vitruvian Man" series and somehow in turn, is kind of a part of it.
I was experimenting with larger sizes than the 70 x 70 cm dimensions of the “Vitruvian Man”, working on the expressive possibilities of the human body and its relationship with space.
By doubling the size (140 x 140 cm), the relationship with space has taken on a different value by focusing on the contrast between full and empty.
The empty space has thus turned into an element itself, in which the bodies remain prisoners, just like Michelangelo's “i Prigioni” from which the series takes its name.

Piece No. 1 which opens the series is directly connected to the “Vitruvian Man” series. The human figure is enclosed in a 70 x 70 square module, itself inserted in a 140 x 140 cm square.
The appearance of architectural elements introduces a new theme that brings the work closer to an abstract concept.

The piece plays with the contrast between full and empty spaces, between the dense amalgam of the background, a concentration of mass, and the dark depth of the space enclosed within the body.

This work belongs to the previous painting “I Prigioni opera n. 3” inspired by Michelangelo’s “Dying slave” (Schiavo morente).
In that piece the body was so sinuous that I doubted if it had to be a man or a woman.
Finally it was a male subject.
Instead this is my personal female interpretation of the “Dying slave”.
